An Observation About the 2013 DJ Mag #Top100DJs

No. This is not an article analyzing genre trends in dance music.
Yes. There are only two trance acts in the top 10 and four in the top 20 this year. We’ve established why already.

Some observations about this year’s poll include:

  1. There aren’t any fun articles on the artists
  2. DJ Mag went ahead and made a ’10 Things You Should Know About Our Poll’ list
  3. Someone other than Armin, Tiesto, David Guetta or Paul van Dyk won.
  4. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike… wow. Sure they’re hot right now but damn. People apparently LOVE them.

Let’s look at #2 for a hot second:

It seems like DJ Mag would write “10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT #TOP100DJS” for one of two reasons:

  1. They want to educate the newer/younger fans on the history of the poll and why it’s important
  2. The haters are starting to get under their skin

Being that they talk about trolling and haters, we’ll go with the latter.
So let’s examine some of that Top 10 list (in a random order):

10) “IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT WE THINK OF DANCE MUSIC TODAY, READ THE MAG!”

“Lastly, the poll is offered as YOUR chance to have a say. We ask YOU to tell us who YOUR favourite DJs are. Ultimately, though, as a publication, DJ Mag serves to spot emerging underground talent that WE rate, while providing news, reviews and features about dance music culture as a whole — i.e music, clubs, DJ technology — driven by our own editorial vision.”

Apparently DJ Mag wants the world to know that their top 10 list is far, far different from that of the people. And that’s sort of the point. All these haters forget the fact that for the most part, DJ Magazine is pretty far to the left. This poll is for the people to say what they like. The DJ Mag staff are into underground/niche stuff themselves. So leave them alone!

1) IT’S A PUBLIC VOTE

politician who sent dick pics

DJ Mag is annoyed that all the hate is directed towards them when snobby fans don’t see their favorite underground niche artists represented. Completely understandable. But with all the talk of paid voting and the promise of ousting cheaters never coming to fruition, DJ Mag needs to just let it go. There will ALWAYS be haters. Of everything. Restaurants, DJs, clothes, politicians… you name it. Get over it!!!

3) THE WORLD IS BIGGER THAN BERGHAIN…

No shit, Sherlock. And for those of you don’t know what Berghain is, don’t feel bad. It’s an underground techno club in Berlin – the epicenter of cool guy techno. A friend from Frankfurt says it caters to a more gay crowd these days. Berlin is so underground Richie Hawtin is probably considered a sellout. Don’t worry DJ Mag, the snobs are just really loud. There aren’t nearly as many of them as there are of the #YoloSwagRage variety. All good.

But like… really DJ Mag? Let’s be serious here – you don’t need to justify your poll to a bunch of haters… f them. Your poll is one of the most fun things in EDM… besides deadmau5′ Twitter obviously.

4) WHAT DO WE MEAN BY ‘THE WORLD’S NO.1 DJ’?

If you’re admitting it’s about the ‘most popular’ instead of ‘the best’ or ‘most technically gifted’ then you might as well change the name of the poll brah…

5) SOME PEOPLE GET REALLY ANGRY ABOUT IT!

Duh. They’re called butt-hurt music snobs. Let em talk

6) WHY DAFT PUNK?

You don’t have to answer that. Why do people vote for Daft Punk? Why does DJ Mag allow people to vote for Daft Punk? Easy…

RESPECT!

7) THE POLL IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF WHAT WE DO…

DJ Mag actually produces some really great content about some really great artists from throughout the world. They’re right. The poll is only a small part of what they do. And it’s a shame people don’t realize that. Instead of bitching and moaning to DJ Mag, all you haters should just go to a mainstream EDM show and bitch and moan at the fans. Or better yet, just shut up and enjoy what you like and let everyone else enjoy what they like.

Big ups to you DJ Mag. We respect the grind.
